More about me, if you don’t mind.

Communicating Social Responsibility ConferenceSeptember and October were a whirlwind of speaking engagements. I enjoyed them all tremendously, but I’m glad those two months are behind me. I recently received my scores for some of my speaking engagements.

For the International Association of Business Communicators’ Communicating Social Responsibility Conference conference my session received an average rating of 4.5 out of 5. The rating for the overall conference was 4.2 so I’m pleased to have surpassed the average. It was a great conference, and nice to speak to a group of people focusing on CSR in their business.

Net.Finance EASTNet.Finance East took place this past October in New York. It was a great conference, full of great presentations and great participants asking insightful questions. At this conference my average rating on a scale of 1-5 was 4.76 for content and 4.81 for presentation. Those may be my highest marks ever (including high school).

It’s extremely rewarding to be able to speak at these conferences, share my knowledge, learn a whole lot from the other presenters and attendees and get to bring that knowledge back to Vancity. To be this well received is truly icing on the cake.

Net.Finance West2009 will have a lot less speaking engagements for me. Time to focus on my real work at Vancity. I love my job and want to spend more time doing that and not travelling around. I’ll be at a few, including The Finance 2.0 Summit taking place in New York January 26-27, 2009 and I’ll be back for another run at the main Net.Finance West taking place April 20-23, 2009 in Las Vegas.

See you there.

Speaking at BC AIM in December.

British Columbia Association of Integrated MarketersI was asked by my friend Clayton Mitchell to speak at an upcoming luncheon presented by BC AIM (the BC Association of Integrated Marketers). I was happy to agree.

My subject, well known to regular readers of my blog, is called Do Well By Doing Good. Here’s the description:

Increasing community engagement and leading on key social and environmental issues can improve your brand and your business. Trust and accountability are two key drivers of success, and are directly impacted by demonstrating a commitment to shared values.

  • Good corporate citizenship increases transparency, accountability and trust
  • Improves ability to leverage social media
  • Creates a deeper connection with customers and prospects

He asked me what is the one thing I want people to take away from my presentation, and here’s what I said:

Knowing who you are as a company and integrating that across all media allows for unique opportunities to express and share your brand.

If you’re in Vancouver on December 11th, come on down.

Four down, one to go.

William at BarCampBankBCI honestly have no idea what I was thinking a few months back when I agreed to speak at five conferences in two months. Today I finished my penultimate engagement, and I’m starting to feel relieved.

It was been an extraordinary honour to be able to address such a diverse set of audiences.

  • From the Internet Marketing Conference here in Vancouver focusing on general online marketing techniques and tactics
  • Organizing and promoting BarCampBankBC, which was a truly amazing, inspiring and rewarding experience
  • Traveling to Indiana for the 2008 Partnership Symposium which was an event I had been looking forward to for almost a year and was a fantastic chance to see many of my favourite CU people from across North America
  • And today I spoke here in Vancouver at the IABC Communicating Social Responsibility Conference where I got to address a room full of people dedicated to bringing integrity and values to their business models.

I have one last one to get to. Net.Finance East will take place October 28-29th in New York and will be focusing on banking innovations. I always enjoy Net.Finance conferences, as I learn so much and get to meet some amazing peers.

After Net.Finance East, I have nothing until January when I go back to New York for The Finance 2.0 Summit.

Next year, I need to be a whole lot more selective, I just can’t afford to be away from the office and my family this much.

It feels a little like the end of an era for me. I have learned a ton, met some amazing people, sparked some incredible dialogue and really found my place in the industry. If you’re reading this, it may well be because we met at one of these events. If so, shoot me a comment and say hello.
